Eczema


Eczema is a highly individualised condition which varies from person to person and comes in many different forms. It effects people of all ages, but usually occurs in children, however it can occur at any point in life. When the lipid (oily) barrier of the skin is reduced, this leads to an increase in water loss and a tendency for skin to become dry.

Eczema is an itchy inflammation of the skin associated with:

  • Redness & Inflammation
  • Dry Skin
  • Blistering
  • Signs of superficial infection e.g. weeping 

Common types of eczema include:

  • Atopic – Atopic dermatitis. This is the most severe and chronic type.
  • Contact – Most common. Occurs when skin comes into contact with certain substances causing it to become inflamed.
  • Seborrheic – Usually effects the scalp. Itchy and inflamed. Commonly known as cradle cap.
  • Dyshidrotic – Irritation on the palms of hands and soles of the feet.
  • Varicose – Effects the lower legs and is common in people with varicose veins.
  • Asteatic – Usually effects ages 60+.
